ABSTRACT A microdilution broth method for the determination of bacterial sensitivitv to antimicrobial agents was used to compare the efficacy of ten topical antibiotic eyedrops (Neosporin, Neopolycin, Xanalin, Poly-Oph, Polyspectran, Spersapolymyxin, Tobrex, Genta-Oph, Polytrim and Spersacet C) in the inhibition of seven common ocular pathogens.

The study showed that the inhibitory capacity of Tobrex and Genta-Oph in most of the organism were slgihtly higher than the combined neomycin, polymyxin B with or without gramicidin eyedrops and Polytrim. Spersacet C had poor activity except for Str. pneumoniae. The results also revealed that originally made and locally made antibiotic eyedrops with the same formula were comparable in the effectiveness.
