AbstractA retrospective study of the side-effects of silicone oil implantation was carried out on 58 patients with retinal detachment and advanced proliferative vitreoretinopathy or giant retinal tear.

All of whom had previously failed to reattach with vitrectomy, membrane peeling and scleral buckling. The major complications were glaucoma (37.5%), keratopathy (32.14%), emulsification of silicone oil (23.2%) and cataract in phakic eyes (75%). Silicone oil was removed either as part of the treatment of anterior segment complications or need no further tamponade effect in 35.71%.

Average follow up period was 8.86 months. Anatomic retinal reattachment was obtained in 57% of these eyes.
