Abstract A prospective study for the comprison between low dose Mitomycin C (0.2 mg/ml twice a day for five days) and topical steroid in the prevention of recurrence after surgical removal of primary and recurrent pterygia was analysed. Forty-five eyes of 38 patients were instilled with Mitomycin C while 6 eyes of 5 patients used topical steroid. The result revealed that primary pterygia with Mitomycin C (gr. 1 31 eyes) had a lower recurrent rate than the recurrent pterygia with Mitomycin C (gr.2 14 eyes) and the pterygia with topical steroid (gr.3), with statistical significance (P<0.05) by chi-square analysis. The recurrent rates of pterygia group 1,2 and 3 were 19%, 36% and 33% respectively.

Eleven eyes of 45 pterygia, which were treated with Mitomycin C, recurred within 1 month, and the mean follow up period was 3 months. The complications of low dose Mitomycin C were mild superficial punctate keratitis (11.1%), chemosis (4.4%), discomfort (2.2%) and scleral thinning (2.2%).
