Posterior Segment Intraocular Foreign Body.

ABSTRACT Sixty patients with intraocular foreign body in the posterior segment (vitreous, retina) who admitted to Siriraj Hospital between April 1986 and 1992 were analysed.

The patients were 52 men, 8 women, age ranging 16-47 years. Metallic foreign bodies were found in 55 eyes and 5 eyes were no metallic. The injury mostly caused by metal chips during hammering and drilling. Surgical procedures for the foreign body removal were : removal with external magnet via pars plana 1 case, transscleral removal through a scleral flap 6 cases and plana vitrectomy combined with intraocular magnet and / or foreign body forceps 53 cases. The foreign body could not be removed in 11 cases due to massive intraoperative bleeding or thick fibrous encapsulation.   
Visual improvement found in 30 cases, the visual implairment correlated to the severity of injury, associated ocular structural damage and postoperative complications,
