Causes of Extraocular Muscle Palsies

ABSTRACT A retrospective study in 138 patients with extraocular muscle palsies presented during 1985-1990 in the Neuroophthalmology clinic, Chulalongkorn University Hospital.

Seventy-one cases were males and 67 cases were females. The majority was found between 21-30 years old (24.64%) in the range of 1-87 years old. Lateral rectus palsy was the most common finding and superior oblique was the least. The undetermined causes were the large number (31.9%) where as the Imown causes were myasthenia gravis (21%), head trauma, neoplasm, vasculopathy and aneurysm respec tively. Most of the patient were followed less than 6 months (73.9%) and superior oblique was found to have a good recovery.
