BSTRACT In
order to determine the causes and effects of intraocular lens (IOLs) removal,
a group of 26 cases involving lOLs removal, carried out at Siriraj Hospital
during the period from November 1,1987 to October 31,1992, were analyzed.
Of the 26 cases, 17 involved
removal of the anterior chamber lens and 9 the posterior chamber lens. The
most frequent reasons for the necessity of lens removal were as a result of
corneal decompensation, endophthalmitis and lens malposition. Of the 26 lOLs
removal cases, only 5(19.2%) exhibited improved vision post removal. The reasons
for lens removal in this group of 5 cases included: lens malposition, retinal
detachment with pseudophakic adhesions, traumatic wound leakage with lens
dislocation and comeal decompensation.
