ABSTRACT
Refractive
states have been studied in 1,219 early school-age childen (6-12 years of
age) of Samsen primary school of which 593 were female and 664 were male between
November 1, 1995 to October 30, 1996. Strabismus, color blindness, amblyopia
and curvature of the comea have also been studied. The
results of cycloplegic refraction showed that 25.8 percent were emmetropic
(0 + 0.5D), 61.3 percent were hypermetropia and 12.6 percent were myopia~
9.43 percent needed glasses to correct his/her myopia, astigmatism or combined,
of which 5,49 percent were prescribed the first pair of glasses while 1.23
percent had a new prescription to correct existing pairs. Family history of
myopia were found in 70.58 percent. There were 2 cases of exotropia (0.15
percent) and 1.88 percent of color vision abnormalities. No
statistical differences of comeal curvature were found among emmetropic, myopic
and hyperopic children.
