Factors such as age, sex, occupation, type of diabetes, disease duration, blood sugar, body weight, height were recorded and were analyzed for association with diabetic retinopathy.

Resultes Eight hundred and forty two patients were enrolled. Cataract was presented in 58%. Diabetic retinopathy was found in 21.8% of the patients and PDR was found in 2.6%. Factors significantly associated with the presence of diabetic retinopathy were duration of diabetes, blood sugar control, hypertension and albuminuria (p < 0.05).

Conclusion The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in community hospitals was 21.8%. Knowledge of risk factors for diabetic retinopathy is beneficial for development of guideline for referral for general practitioners as well as internists in community hospitals.
