ABSTRACT Purpose : To evaluate the efficacy, predictability and safety of bitoric LASIK ablation for mixed and high myopic astigmatism.

Methods : LASIK was performed on 20 eyes of 17 patients for correction of mixed and high myopic astigmatism with manifest cylinder from -1.75 to -6.00 D (mean -3.28 ± 1.45 D). A bitoric LASIK ablation was performed using the Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser.

Main outcome measure : Uncorrected visual acuity, manifest refraction and best corrected visual acuity were the parameter measured preoperatively and at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively.

Results : Refactive astigmatism was reduced to a mean of -0.53 ± 0.37 (range -1.25 to 0.50 D). Uncorrected visual acuity was 20/40 or better in 95% of the eyes. 80% of the eyes achieved an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/25 or better. There was no loss of best spectacle corrected visual acuity more than 2 lines.

Conclusions : Bitoric LASIK ablation is an effective procedure to correct mixed and high myopic astigmatism. The results were predictable. It is a safe procedure, no any eyes lost best spectacle corrected visual acuity postoperatively.
