ABSTRACT : Purpose : To review indications and patient characteristics for penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) in Ramathibodi Hospital in 5-year period.
Methods : Retrospective review of records at Department of Ophthalmology,Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University from January 1997 to December 2001. Age, gender, clinical indication, source of corneal donors and additional surgical procedures were recorded.
Results : The 366 records were reviewed. The leading indication for penetrating kerato;lasty were corneal scar (28.69%), regraft (17.49%), pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (12.57%) and tectonic indication (9.29%). The average age of patients was 49.88 years old. (range 9 months old-91 years old) Male/Female ratio was 1.5/1 (220/146). Sources of corneal donors were from Mid-America Transplant Services (42.62%), Thai Red Cross (42.35%), Preserved cornea (7.92%) Sri Lanka Donation Society (5.19%) and others (1.91%). Majority of additional surgical procedures were cataract removal with intraocular lens implantation (19.13%) and secondary intraocular lens implantation (8.20%)
Conclusion : Corneal scar was the leading indication for PKP in our series followed by regraft. This trend was similar to the previous reports from Asian countries. No differences in numbers of donor grafts from Thai Red Cross and Mid-America Transplant Services was found.
