ABSTRACT : A research team studied the treatment of endophthalmitis post cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation by administering intravitreal antibiotics, subconjunctival antibiotics, and topical antibiotics combined with an oral antibiotic (ofloxacin), without intravenous antibiotics, in 23 patients. Results were that this regimen of antibiotics controlled infection in the majority of cases (20 patients). In 3 patients, the infection could not be controlled, and vitrectomy was performed. Of the 20 patients responding to antibiotics the majority (14 patients) needed only one dose of intravitreal antibiotics. The other 6 patients needed 2 intravitreal doses to control infection. Three patients needed late vitrectomy (4 month after treatment) due to vitreal clouding. At 3 months follow up time visual acuity > 6/60 in 15 cases (65.25%), < 6/60 in 8 case (34.78%).
