PURPOSE : To evaluate the  results of small –incision cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation using Prechop Manal Phacofragmontation techinque  (Prechop MPF) performed from April 2000 through May 2003

SETTING : Department of ophthalmology,Prapokklao Hospital , Chantaburi ,Thailand.

DESIGN : Interventional  case series.

METHOD : A Retrospective study was performed of all 339 consecutive patients who underwent  extracapsular  cataract extraction using prechop MPF technique.Data included are preoperative and postoperative best corrected-visual  acuity, intraoperative and postoperative complications and postoperative  astigmatism. The patients were examined preoperatively and 1 day and 1, 3, 6 months postoperatively.

RESULTS

Of 339 eyes ,best corrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better was achieved in 223         eyes(65.78%) and  of 20/20 or better in  154   eyes (    45.43 %)  at the end of first postoperative week. The most frequent intraoperative  complication was posterior capsule rupture  ( n = 8 ) . In all  cases of capsule rupture , a posterior chamber IOL was implanted in the sulcus. The significant postoperative complication was  transient  corneal  edema  , which developed in 29 eyes    (  8.55  %)  No permanent complications  (e.g. corneal decompensation ) occurred  in any case .  The mean preoperative astigmatism was 0.53 diopter(D) +/- 1.17 (SD) and at one month postoperatively , the mean astigmatism was 0.18 +/- 1.61D.  Simple  subtraction analysis of preoperative and  1 month postoperative keratometry  showed that the mean  induced astigmatism was 0.34 +/- 1.43 D.

CONCLUSION

Small incision cataract extraction using  PrechopMPF technique  is safe , economical  and dose not require expensive instrumentation.
